Intel and MSI Redefine Handheld Gaming with the Arc™ G3 Extreme-Powered Claw 8 EX AI+

At Computex in Taipei, Intel and MSI introduced the world's first handheld gaming device powered by the new Intel® Arc™ G3 Extreme processor. The latest MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ also debuts an exclusive "Void Purple" finish, giving the device a distinctive appearance alongside its next-generation performance.

Designing a handheld gaming system, however, presents challenges very different from building a conventional laptop. Over the course of more than two years, Intel and MSI worked closely together to create the Claw 8 EX AI+, combining expertise from notebook engineering with valuable lessons learned from earlier handheld generations. The result is a compact device that delivers powerful gaming performance while maintaining the portability expected from a handheld platform.

Building on Experience Across Multiple Generations

The Claw 8 EX AI+ represents another milestone in the long-standing collaboration between Intel and MSI. Previous MSI handheld systems featured Intel® Core™ Ultra Series 1 (Meteor Lake) and Intel® Core™ Ultra 200V (Lunar Lake) processors. With the introduction of Intel® Arc™ G-Series processors, Intel adopted a new approach by developing a dedicated SoC specifically optimized for handheld gaming.

According to Nish Neelalojanan, Senior Director of Product Management for Intel's Client Computing and Physical AI Group, the new platform reflects everything the engineering teams learned from previous handheld designs.

Rather than simply increasing performance, Intel focused on creating a new class of handheld devices capable of delivering a premium gaming experience. The efficiency improvements of the Intel Arc G3 Extreme architecture allowed engineers to optimize both system performance and user comfort.

Software enhancements also played an important role by extending battery life and improving thermal management, allowing the device to remain cool even during demanding gaming sessions. Intel also collaborated with Microsoft to optimize the Windows 11 Xbox experience, ensuring smoother gameplay through better resource allocation and shader pre-compilation.

As a result, the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ delivers console-like usability while providing improved gaming performance on an Intel-powered handheld platform.

Balancing Performance, Cooling, and Battery Life

Handheld gaming devices have traditionally forced users to choose between high performance and long battery life. MSI and Intel aimed to eliminate that compromise.

Joseph Shih, Product Manager for the MSI Claw, explained that the new Intel Arc G3 Extreme platform delivers a substantial leap in gaming capability. Popular AAA titles such as *Cyberpunk 2077* now achieve performance improvements of up to 37%, providing smoother frame rates and more responsive gameplay.

Achieving these gains required extensive engineering collaboration between the two companies.

Shih noted that every millimeter inside a handheld system matters. Engineers must carefully balance processing power, thermal performance, battery capacity, signal quality, and user comfort within an extremely compact enclosure.

From the earliest stages of development, Intel and MSI jointly optimized motherboard layouts, cooling solutions, and power delivery to maximize both efficiency and performance.

One notable design decision involved placing the CPU and DRAM at opposite ends of the motherboard. While many handheld systems position these components side by side to simplify signal routing, Intel's advanced signal simulation and validation technologies enabled MSI to adopt a layout that improved thermal performance and space utilization without sacrificing stability.

According to Shih, the close cooperation between both engineering teams made it feel like a single organization working toward one shared objective—creating the best possible handheld gaming experience.

The First Successful Boot Marked a Major Milestone

For Bruce Cheng, Senior Director of Co-Engineering within Intel's Client Engineering organization, one of the most memorable moments came in January 2026 when the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ successfully powered on for the first time.

That milestone validated nearly two years of joint engineering work, confirming that countless design decisions and extensive board-level optimizations had achieved their intended results.

Cheng explained that the successful boot demonstrated the performance improvements were no longer theoretical—they had become reality.

Following that achievement, both engineering teams continued refining system performance over several months. Extensive tuning focused on optimizing AAA gaming performance while completing additional validation to ensure the device met Intel's highest quality and reliability standards.

Throughout development, Intel and MSI also maintained continuous communication regarding changing gaming trends. Because the handheld gaming market evolves much faster than the traditional notebook industry, both companies remained flexible, regularly revisiting design assumptions and making adjustments whenever necessary.

Cheng emphasized that this willingness to learn, adapt, and make difficult engineering decisions together was essential to delivering the product on schedule.

The Beginning of a New Handheld Gaming Platform

Although the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is the first handheld gaming device powered by Intel's Arc G3 Extreme processor, it will not be the last.

During Computex, Intel announced that additional Arc G3-based handheld designs from partners including Acer and OneXPlayer are already in development.

Neelalojanan stated that the Arc G3 platform demonstrates Intel's ability to bring desktop-class PC performance and flexibility into handheld gaming systems while simultaneously delivering longer battery life and a more immersive gaming experience. He also expressed confidence that Intel's continued collaboration with MSI and other ecosystem partners will drive the next generation of handheld gaming innovation.
